Life's little celebrations.

And, She’s Off to Boston! September 9, 2017

This week the daughter of a very special co-worker left for her first year of college in Boston which is a terribly long ways away from Issaquah, WA.  This girl has done so much for our family from mentoring my step-daughter as she navigated her way through freshman year in high school to acting as my emergency babysitter when I needed help last summer so that I could make it to running practice. I figured what better way to celebrate her first week in the dorms than with cookies?

Congratulations Halle!  I’m so excited to hear all about your college adventures!

An Elephant Never Forgets… March 24, 2017

I have a friend who has done me the favor of taking countless pictures of me, my kids, my dogs and more.  She’s always happy to try an idea and never accepts money for her time. She’s just happy to grab her camera and spend time playing with me to capture something special.

A few weeks ago she reached out asking if I could help come up with a special cookie that she could take to her mom who is declining from Alzheimer’s.  She sent a few Pinterest elephant ideas and asked me to just do whatever I had time to do.

I borrowed this sweet elephant cutter from a friend and made a dozen cookies for her to take back to her mom to share with the nursing home staff.

Pizza Pizza or Cash

We’ve lived across the street from this family since our daughters were 6 years old.  This year they’re turning 16!  Time flies!  I wanted to do something fun (yet practical because that’s what I do).  I decided to give cash for this special milestone birthday.  16 $5 in this fun pizza presentation.

Share the love for teachers!

Teachers are special people.  The time and energy they spend teaching our children is awesome.  Our PTSA organization does a great job of showing appreciation to our teachers and all of the staff at our elementary school.

When my PTSA mom friend asked if I would be able to make something for the Valentine’s Sweet Treats appreciation event in February I was more than happy to contribute.  I made these cute little cookies for the event.  The pink and blue alligators are my favorite!

Love Notes… February 1, 2017

Filed under: Holiday Celebrations — idreamofparties @ 4:06 pm

20170201_155233Last year I decided to do something a little different for Valentine’s Day.  My kids get candy and treats from Grandma and Grandpa so I felt like I should think beyond the sugar and come up with something else.  I can’t remember where I found this idea but I’m sure it was Pinterest.  I used my Silhouette machine to cut out a bunch of hearts and jotted down 14 things I love about each of twins and a few about my older step-daughter as well.  Each night before bed I write a short note on a heart and tape it to the pantry door.  Each morning the kids wake to find a new note with 1 thing I love about each of them.  Yes, it’s tough to remember to do this every night before bed (think Elf on the Shelf) and the response to my notes isn’t nearly as enthusiastic as it is to the candy my mom sends but I tell myself these notes are something that make them feel good inside and last beyond Valentine’s Day.

Today is February 1st so I started the love notes again.  No one mentioned anything but I’m sure they noticed the bright red hearts taped to the door reminding them that Valentine’s Day is just 14 days away and they should expect to see notes from mom and maybe a few from dad over the next 2 weeks.

The Reptile Man January 27, 2017

20170118_194636My friend at work wanted to take cookies to a party and asked me to make reptile cookies.  Eek!  Snakes give me the creeps!  I didn’t actually own any creepy cookie cutters so I had to consult my favorite cutter website and place an order asap.

As I started decorating these alligators I started to fall in love with them and started thinking of so many other ideas for using this cutter – baby shower, teacher appreciation, Valentine’s Day!  So many cute opportunities to use this again.

The snakes were a challenge for me. I like this buttercream frosting so I had to think of a way to make sure the coil would come through in the finished product.  I used a fine tip black icing to outline the snake and then filled it in with the gold.  In the end I was happy with the outcome.  This is why I love making cookies for friends.  I would have never made a snake cookie before so this was a good new practice for me.

Ack!  I have to confess…I’m so behind on my blog posts and these under water sea creatures were from a party in…gasp….NOVEMBER!  What’s worse is they were for the children of one of my best friends.  I’m so sorry GypsyLife for not blogging about these sooner.

Anyway, Isabel and Alex have birthdays fairly close together so their busy mom threw one big party to celebrate.  This Under the Sea themed party even included a fancy real life mermaid and some ginormous Dory balloons.  I made these cute starfish, sea horse and shark cookies for the party.
