Last week someone I used to work with sent me a note asking if I could make a couple of little cookie treat bags to go along with what she already had planned for her children’s teachers as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. I’m hoping to make cookies in a couple of months for my own children’s teachers for TAW so I figured this could be a great test run for this cookie cutter combination I had in mind.  I love using this #1 cookie cutter because it’s so big and such a great blank slate for so many things.  I teamed #1 with a gold star and red and green apple cookies.  For these cookies I decorated with royal icing because I knew I needed to be able to stack them in a bag and I didn’t want the frosting to smudge.  Main teachers got cellophane bags of 3 cookies and assistants and office staff got glassine bags (which I love btw) with 2 apples in each bag.  I hope the teachers enjoy these!  Thank you teachers for supporting us and inspiring us all to grow up to be successful adults.

Flowers for a Tea Party

Little C turned 3 yesterday. How is that even possible?!?  Now that she’s a big girl it looks like she gets to join her big sisters for a fancy birthday party of her very own.

Her mom asked me a couple of weeks ago if I could do something simple for C’s 3rd birthday.  Something around a tea party theme.  I’ve been really wanting to try something with my new ruffle tip so I made these little flowers.  The pink flowers were made using a basic Wilton ruffle tip (not sure of the tip number).  I’ve also been wanting to do these rosettes that I’ve seen on so many of the cookie and cake blogs.  I used my Wilton star tip on the green and blue cookies to make these little flowers.  If I were to do these again I might try to use a bigger star tip – maybe even the tip I think is technically used on cupcakes.

Special thanks to C’s mom for being so patient with me as I went back and forth with her in about 7 emails with my ideas about shapes and decorating tips.

He Shoots. He Scores! March 20, 2015

This winter was the first year my kindergarten son played basketball.  In just a couple of months we watched him go from no so many skills to master of the basketball.  Watching him learn to dribble, guard and even shoot and score has been a lot of fun but probably the best basketball memory from this season will be the facial expressions and gestures he’s made after he’s scored 2 points as he’s running back down to the other side of the court as he goes from offense to defense.  We’re not big television basketball people so I have no idea where he picked this up but he’s got the bottom pat, the “in yo face” look and the “that’s how you do it” comment perfected. After a little guilting by my mom (thanks mom!) I realized that I make cookies for everyone else’s special occasion so I should probably whip up a batch for my own child as well.  I made these cookies last night to celebrate the end of a fun season.  Go Bulls! basketballs

PSA: CK Royal Icing March 6, 2015

As I approach the 2 year anniversary of my cookie decorating obsession and hobby, I think I’ve finally tackled my fear of royal icing.  Back in January I attended a party planning conference in Arizona and was fortunate to sit next to a sweet cookier The Cookie Fairy from Austin, Texas.  We shared our love of baking cookies and I confessed to her that as much as I love to decorate cookies I do not have a fool proof royal icing.  I cease up in fear every time someone asks for cookies that can be plated because a plate of cookies means I need to be able to stack them ie requires hard frosting so the decorations aren’t ruined.  The Cookie Fairy asked which recipes and mixes I’ve tried and then calmly smiled and said “I think I have your fix”.  She suggested two alternatives to the Wilton meringue powder recipes I’ve been trying. One of them was CK Royal Icing.  As soon as I got back to my hotel room I placed and order for this CK Royal Icing mix.

Last night as I sat down to decorate cookies for a friend who’s hosting a baby shower this weekend I decided to try out the CK Royal Icing mix and I’m hooked!  I still have some work to do on creating a smooth finish but that will come with practice.  For this request I was able to decorate 2 dozen baby girl shower cookies that each hardened just enough to allow me to stack on a platter.  I was able to create both outline and flow icing and decorate fairly easily.  I’m so happy that I met The Cookie Fairy and opened up to share my fear of royal icing with her.  I can’t wait for my friend to see her cookies in person.  I know these are going to be the hit of the table!

So, cookie friends, I come to you today with this Public Service Announcement.  If you too struggle with royal icing, stop what you’re doing and order CK Royal Icing and give it a try.  If it worked for me, it could possibly work for you too.
