For T’s 5th birthday she asked her mom for a Frozen themed party with cookies of Elsa wielding a light saber.  Well, Elsa and sabers are a bit too complicated for my skill level so I had to counter with something I felt I could commit to – snowflakes!  For these snowflakes I started out with a royal icing but the icing was a complete flop so I changed course and went with a butter cream style frosting.  Although this doesn’t provide the smooth glossy decoration that most people prefer, the taste is amazing and I know I can deliver a great product so I went with it.  To take these snowflakes beyond just a plain old snowflake I carefully piped the frosting and then covered with coordinating sanding sugar to give the cookies some sparkle.  I piped the detail in white and added little round details.  For the white and purple cookies where I didn’t have coordinating sanding sugar I used the shimmer dust. This was my first time using this product and I must say I am in love with it.  The very subtle shimmer on the cookies is beautiful.  Packaged in cellophane and tied with a matching ribbon and hang tag these cookies are the perfect sweet treat to celebrate T’s 5th birthday!   I love these snowflakes so much I think I might make them again to accompany my hand delivered Christmas cards for neighborhood friends! Special thanks to T’s mom, who happens to be one of my co-workers, for trusting me with this special request and giving me the opportunity to continue my practice of cookie decorating.
