Sweet Georgia On My Mind May 9, 2014

It’s Friday and I have a million things on my to do list before I can pack up for the weekend. One of the things on my mind are these sweet little cookies for a last minute surprise baby shower. A mom acquaintance saw a few of my previous cookie pictures and asked me if I could do something for her. Although I didn’t feel comfortable writing the full name “Georgia” on the cookies because of my skill level, I felt somewhat confident that I could do a dozen simple “G” initial cookies.

For these cookies I used a corn syrup icing that will eventually harden enough so that I can package in cellophane bags and not make a sticky mess. For the piping detail I used the regular royal icing.

Welcome sweet baby Georgia!

Semi Homemade Like Sandra Lee Would Do May 6, 2014

When my kids were really little we used to watch Semi Homemade with Sandra Lee on the Food Network. I’m all about presentation but I’m also about quick and easy. After baking all weekend for cookie orders I was exhausted and still needed to come up with a small token of my appreciation for my own children’s teachers. I had the best of intentions of whipping up a fresh batch of sugar cookies but then I went to the store and this conveniently package Nestle Toll House cookie dough caught my eye.

So, I did as Sandra Lee would do and went semi homemade for teacher gifts. Packaged mini chocolate chip cookies with a Starbuck’s latte card tied with a pretty ribbon and a simple note of thanks.

And there you have it, a semi homemade teacher appreciation gift.

Teacher Appreciation Gifts May 4, 2014

It’s been rainy and blah this weekend in Seattle which made it a perfect weekend to spend in the kitchen baking. This weekend I had two requests for Teacher Appreciation Week gifts for next week. The busy moms each gave me free rein to use any cookie shape I wanted which was great. Since I last used the canning jar, I’ve had a few ideas of what other fun things I could do with the jar. I also got this watering can cutter a couple of months ago at CookieCon so I decided this would be a good opportunity to give it a try too. As I was browsing Pinterest I also came across the flash card idea. I didn’t have a cutter so I improvised with my pizza cutter and made as close to rectangles as I could get.

I usually package my cookies in a cellophane bag, but I picked up these glassine bags and had an idea to package the cookies in them. I was worried that you wouldn’t be able to see the cookie but the bag is just a little transparent so you can see the bright colors of the icing through the bag. Paired with a sweet hang tag or a sticker with a little note and I think these are adorable.

The end result were these cute cookies perfect as a small teacher thank you. The only problem is I’ve been so busy baking for other people that now I’m left scrambling for teacher gifts for my own children! Better get moving to come up with something by end of the week!

Trains for Mason’s 2nd Birthday May 1, 2014

A former neighborhood mom friend asked if I could make a few Thomas the Train themed cookies for a little birthday celebration she is throwing for son’s 2nd birthday. Of course I jumped at the chance to do something new. When I started out I planned to make a few trains but then supplement these more difficult and detail oriented trains with something “easy” like Rail Road Crossing and Rail Road signs. As I was decorating these I realized that I had it all wrong. The trains weren’t nearly as hard as the signs. The teeny tiny lettering with a fine tip that kept clogging up with icing was enough to about send me over the edge. In the end I’m very please with how these turned out and I hope they add to the celebration Mason’s mom has planned to celebrate his big 2nd birthday!
