Today my family had the honor of joining our extended family to celebrate the first birthday of little L. Little L is the son of our former nanny and her husband. Although we aren’t technically related, our nanny is someone who we hold very near to our hearts as she was so closely connected to our family from the time our babies were 3 months old until almost 4 years old. We were thrilled to be invited to share this special day and I was thrilled to bake cookies for the pirate themed occasion.

I must confess I cannot take credit for the creativity of this cookie. Fortunately for me, I am an excellent student of Pinterest and religiously follow Jenny Cookies blog. This cookie design was something Jenny Cookies did for another party. I added my own twist with the pennant and skull and cross bones hang tag.

Charity Bake Sale October 12, 2013

I am happy to work for a generous company that encourages employees to give back to the community. During the month of October there are so many fun activities and events to support non profit organizations world wide. This weekend I put on my apron and prepared a few tasty treats to donate to the office bake sale on Monday. 100% of the proceeds will benefit Northwest Harvest which serves Washington state to provide nutritious meals for those who are hungry statewide. For my contribution I made frosted sugar cookies, chocolate dipped Oreos and Ghost s’mores. I hope they help raise a lot of money for a great cause! I’m happy to be able to put my love of baking and crafts to use.

Angry Birds and Minnie Mouse October 5, 2013

This weekend our neighbors are having a house warming/birthday party for their 4 and 2 year olds. As I’m always looking for an excuse to practice decorating cookies I decided to bring cookies. Rumor has it there will be LOTS of Angry Birds at the party with a dash of Minnie Mouse. I’ve never done cookies for either of these themes so I thought I’d see what I could do. For these cookies I wanted to re-attempt the royal icing because I’ve struggled with this so many times before. I love the smooth finish of royal icing so I really want to figure out the secret. I found a different recipe which uses light corn syrup instead of egg whites so I decided to give it a try. The finished product isn’t my absolute best work, but I do love the shiny hard finish and the icing was easy enough to work with. Happy 4th and 2nd birthday C & L! Welcome to the neighborhood!
